Red Class 2022 - 2023

Week 7 (w/b 17/07/23)

On Tuesday we held our annual ‘Manor’s Got Talent’. Red Class demonstrated many talents and performed in front of others confidently. We have been writing about our year in English and have thought about all the memories we have made.  This week we went on a science walk. We went to Manor Pond, our class garden, the Wild Area and the school field and explored signs of summer. On Thursday we had our fundraising event to raise money for our three chosen charities (the RSPCA, Compassion Charity and Toilet Twinning). Red Class made love hearts to sell and organised different games to raise money for the charity ‘Compassion’ (which helps children living in poverty). Red Class enjoyed taking part in the other classes fundraising stalls and games.

 

Well done Red Class, you have all worked really hard this year. Have a great summer. J

Week 6 (w/b 10/07/23)

On Monday we had a fantastic day with the author Kristina Stephenson. Kristina talked to us about how she became an author and helped us to make hand puppets. In the afternoon we watched a fantastic show called ‘The Museum of Marvellous Things’ with live music, giant puppets and magical effects. On Wednesday we performed in our samba concert. It was lots of fun! In our Art lessons this week we created a street of houses using collage. We also began organising our charity fundraising stalls and made some salt dough hearts to sell.

Week 5 (w/b 03/07/23)

We created collage houses this week in Art. In Computing we made our own videos about the Great Fire of London using the Puppet Pals app.

On Thursday, Hythe Library shared the summer reading challenge with us. This year it is called ‘Ready, Set, Read!’

Week 4 (w/b 26/06/23)

This week we designed, made and evaluated Tudor houses in Design and Technology.

On Tuesday, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service visited our class and we learnt about the dangers of fire and how to stay safe.

Week 3 (w/b 19/06/23)

Red Class have been writing about the Great Fire of London in English, retelling the events and writing recounts. This week in History we thought about the changes made to London after the fire. In Maths, we have been learning how to multiply by 2, 5 and 10 this week and drawing arrays. We also had fun using paint to find doubles. In Computing we wrote some facts about the fire with a partner using a word processing programme.

On Wednesday we had our Sports Day an enjoyed lots of races.

Week 2 (w/b 12/06/23)

This week Red Class were phonics superstars and read lots of words using their sounds. We wrote the story of ‘Rumpelstiltskin’ in English and used lots of adjectives in our writing. We have been subtracting in Maths using dienes and number lines.  In History we learnt the different ways people put out the fire during The Great Fire of London. We created a background on the laptops of the fire with a partner in Computing. Red Class had great mouse control. This week in Art we used collage to make houses. In Science we undertook an investigation into which material was the most absorbent. We discovered that, out of the materials we tested, cotton wool came out as the most absorbent. Red Class made some lovely frames for Father’s Day on Thursday with the PTFA. In PE this week we prepared for Sports Day next week. On Thursday, Prazin’ Hands came to our school and delivered a lovely puppet show on internet safety.

Week 1 (w/b 05/06/23)

Red Class have had a fantastic first week back at school. We began learning about The Great Fire of London in our History lessons. We learnt about how the fire started and the reasons why it spread. Our role play has turned into ‘Pudding Lane Bakery’ and we have explored what a bakery is like using our imagination and acting skills. We have used books to develop our understanding of The Great Fire of London and looked at pictures together. Red Class enjoyed the sunshine in our PE lessons this week and practised some skills ready for sports day. In Science this week we recapped our learning about materials and took part in an investigation to find out which material is waterproof.  In English we have been learning the story ‘Rumpelstiltskin’. We have acted out the story, and written descriptions and letters. On Thursday we went on an Art walk in the local area. We did some observational drawings of houses and thought about size, shape and patterns.

Summer 2

Our topic this half term is ‘The Great Fire of London’.

This half term (Summer 2) we are reading books by Catherine Rayner.

Week 6 (w/b 22/05/23)

This week in Maths we have been learning about fractions. We explored and found half and a quarter of objects, shapes and quantities. In English we listened to the story ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ and wrote a description of the caterpillar. We also wrote part of the story and prepositions about the butterfly.  In PSHE this week we learnt about how ‘Fake is a Mistake’ and reflected on how special we are and what we like. We also discussed how to keep our bodies and minds healthy and made a mini Boris the robot. Our class garden has lots of flowers in it and we have been watering these every day to help the bees. In RE we have been learning about how church is a special place for Christians. We met Meg and Sam and talked about what makes church a special place for them and different things that happen there. As a class we labelled things you might find in a church and had discussions about our special places.

Week 5 (w/b 15/05/23)

On Monday this week we had a visitor come and talk to us about Florence Nightingale and we learnt more about her life. This week in English we have been writing a report about Florence Nightingale using information we learnt from our History lessons and our special visitors. In Maths this week we have been learning about money using Milo’s Money. We discussed what we might do with some money and solved lots of different money problems. In Science we continued to learn about trees and thought about what plants need to survive. We began our RE learning this week on special places. We drew and wrote about our special places and about a place that is special to someone else. In Art, we used our colour mixing skills to paint a self-portrait in either the style of Picasso or Hans Holbein.

Week 4 (w/b 08/05/23)

This week we have been writing a recount and commands pretending to be Florence Nightingale. We have enjoyed acting out being nurses and doctors in our hospital role play. On Thursday we met a local nurse and learnt about modern nursing. In our Computing lesson we started to create a leaflet about Florence Nightingale on the programme 2Publish. We used the mouse to draw a picture and typed a sentence using the keyboard. In Art we learnt how to colour mix and use a paint station to make different colours. We have been solving missing number problems in Maths this week and exploring the trees in our school grounds in Science.

Week 3 (w/b 01/05/23)

In PE this week we have been developing our movement skills and rocking and rolling in different ways. In Computing, Red Class have been learning typing skills in preparation to use technology purposefully to create an information leaflet about Florence Nightingale.

We continued learning about Florence Nightingale in our History lessons and explored different images of her. We then thought about the doctors, nurses and soldiers opinions of Florence and about objects that could go in a museum about Florence. In Art we learnt about Hans Holbein and then we created portraits inspired by his artwork. Red Class learnt a chant in Music and used the musical instruments to add sound effects. In English this week we learnt about the coronation and wrote letters to King Charles. On Friday we celebrated the coronation at school by wearing red, white and blue and crowns. We had a special street party style lunch and sang the national anthem.

Week 2 (w/b 24/04/23)

This week we have been writing the story ‘How the Tortoise Got His Shell’. We then learnt about tortoises and met Jimmy the tortoise. We wrote questions and asked them to find out more information about tortoises. Red Class then wrote some fantastic reports about tortoises in English. In Art we learnt about Picasso and created our own self portrait in the style of Picasso using the felt tip pens. We explored the programme 2Publish in Computing and used the mouse to draw a picture from our tortoise story and the keyboard to write about it. Red Class learnt about evergreen and deciduous trees in Science this week and we also went on a Science Walk. We visited four different locations on our walk, Manor Pond, the Wild Area, the school field and our class garden. We thought about what we could see and hear in the different places. We observed some signs of spring such as blossom, buds and new green leaves growing on trees.

Week 1 (w/b 17/04/23)

This week we have begun learning about Florence Nightingale in History. Our topic this half term is ‘Lady with the Lamp’ and we have created a timeline of Florence’s life and thought about why she was called ‘the Lady with the Lamp’. Our role play this half term is a hospital and we have been having a go at using bandages as well as pretending to be doctors and nurses. We have also been recapping balancing and using the equipment safely in PE. In Art this week we drew a self-portrait using different pencils. We enjoyed using the mirrors and drawing the different features on our faces. In Computing we learnt about how to stay safe online and to ask permission before sharing things online. Summer 1

Our topic this half term is ‘Lady with the Lamp’.

This half term (Summer 1) we are reading books by Julia Jarman.

Week 6 (w/b 27/03/23)

This week we have been learning about happy and sad in our RE lessons. We learnt about the Easter story, the happy and sad parts and why it is important for Christians. Meg and Sam (our puppets) visited Red Class and shared what they have in their church to celebrate Easter. On Wednesday, we held an Easter Service at All Saints Church, Fawley and we did the acting. In Maths this week we have been dividing. We thought about sharing chocolate eggs with our friends and how to make sure it is equal.  In Science we concluded one of our investigations on how plants grow. We also held our Hampshire Music Service music concert this week. We enjoyed playing the ukulele and singing the songs we have learnt for our families. On Friday Prazin’ Hands came to our school and we loved watching the puppet show about Easter.

Spring 2 RE

We acted out the Easter story around the school grounds.

Week 5 (w/b 20/03/23)

In our Computing lessons we have been programming BeeBots. We used our BeeBot maps and recorded a simple programme for our friends to follow. This week in Maths we have been learning about multiplication. We created arrays using paint and multiplied by 2, 5 and 10. We also explored 3D shapes. In Design and Technology we used our designs to make a moving poster about Rwanda. We have reflected on our work and evaluated our moving posters in DT and printing in Art. In Music we learnt the 'a minor' chord and 'f major' chord. We then made the final preparations for our concert next week.

Week 4 (w/b 13/03/23)

This week we started our Design and Technology unit on levers and sliders. We have been learning that images can move by using different mechanisms. Red Class looked at different pop-up books and enjoyed sharing these together. We also experimented by making pop-ups, sliders, spinners and levers. We then designed a moving poster about Rwanda. In our Music lesson we learnt the c major chord as well as developing our strumming and plucking skills. We have been subtracting in Maths and learning poems in English. In our Solent Mind session this week we learnt about positive affirmations and wrote kind words about our friends. At the end of the week we created cards for Mothering Sunday.

Week 3 (w/b 03/03/23)

In Art this week we have been printing using our print block. We experimented using a repeated pattern using colour. In Music we learnt how to strum and pluck on the ukulele. We enjoyed playing to different songs. We were excited to see that our seed has grown and discussed what a plant needs to grow in Science. We then thought about how much water a seed needs to grow (e.g. no water, some water, lots and lots of water) and wrote a prediction. In Maths we have been adding on a number line and learning about length. We measured some snakes using a ruler and recording the standard units. In PSHE we thought about forgiveness and listened to the story ‘Boris the Robot’. We discussed how Boris’ situation was hard (like a bath bomb) but when his friends forgave him the situation disappeared (like a bath bomb dissolving). We talked about times that we have forgiven. Red Class created their own BeeBot mats in Computing based on Rwanda. They worked well as a team and will be programming a BeeBot around their maps in the coming weeks.

Week 2 (w/b 27/02/23)

This week we have been keeping a record of the weather in Kabaya, Rwanda and Holbury, England ready to make comparisons in Geography next week. In Science we have been planting seeds ready to observe germination and have been thinking about what a plant needs to grow. We have been discussing if it matters which way a seed in planted using concept cartoons. This week Red Class have been adding using dienes in Maths and measuring weight using non-standard units. In Art, we created a print block based on Rwanda and will be using this to print with next week. In English, we have been retelling the story ‘The Magic Porridge Pot’ and writing questions for the characters. We learnt how to play the song ‘Thumb Brush Strum’ in our Music lesson on the ukuleles.

 

We celebrated World Book Day this week and dressed up as book characters. We enjoyed sharing our books together, acting out stories and writing about our character.

 

Week 1 (w/b 20/02/23)

We have had a great week back at school. This week we began exploring our topic ‘We’re off to Rwanda’. A mystery object arrived in our classroom and we thought about what it could be. It was a mosquito net! We tried it out and thought about its purpose. We have been learning about the village Kabaya in the Rwanda. In Geography we used maps and looked at the globe to find Africa, Rwanda and Kabaya. We then looked at photos of the village and discussed human and physical features. In Maths we have been learning about number. We have been comparing numbers, filling in the missing number in a sequence and making numbers using dienes. In English we have learnt the story ‘The Magic Porridge Pot’.  We have been writing about this story and using actions to retell it. Red Class began their ukulele lessons this week with Hampshire Music Service. We found out about the different parts of the ukulele and where it originated from. Red Class enjoyed making sounds and learning a new song.

Spring 2

Our topic this half term is ‘We’re Off to Rwanda’.

This half term (Spring 2) we are taking part in Hampshire Picture Book Award. We will be reading books by a variety of authors.

Week 6 (w/b 06/02/23)

We have marked Place2Be's Children's Mental Health Week 2023 by taking part in different activities throughout the week:

Mindful Monday – we did cosmic yoga in the hall with the other classes.

Tasty Tuesday – we enjoyed fruit kebabs.

Wellbeing Wednesday – Arlo the dog came to school. We learnt about Pets as Therapy and how animals can help our mental health. Some children read Arlo a story.

Together Thursday – Each class created a different creature for a whole school piece of artwork. Red Class coloured butterflies and were very creative!

 

We also thought about how to stay safe online and discussed internet safety on Safer Internet day on Tuesday 7th February.

 

In PSHE we have been learning about team work and thinking about others.  Red Class enjoyed experimenting with clay and making marks with tools in Art. We went on a Science Walk on Tuesday and thought about seasonal changes. We went to four different locations (Manor Pond, our class garden, the Wild Area and the school field). We took observations and the temperature and discussed what we could see, hear, smell and feel.

Week 5 (w/b 30/01/23)

This week in collective worship we thought about faith and trust. We heard the story of ‘The Miraculous Catch of Fish’ and acted it out in our class worship.  We learnt about balancing in PE this week and how to balance on three points of our body. We then had a go on the apparatus. In Art, we followed our plans to paint our clay tiles in the style of Gaudi. This week in PSHE we had time to reflect on being kind and who takes care of us. We then made someone who takes care of us a card to show our appreciation. In RE this week we thought about remembering. We learnt about what some Hindus might remember when celebrating Holi. Red Class enjoyed looking and reading books about Hindu tradition together. Later on in the week we brought an object in from home that helps us to remember someone or something. We discussed why our object was special and who it reminds us of.

Week 4 (w/b 23/01/23)

In English this week we wrote a report about our school. We started by exploring the different areas in our school and taking pictures for our reports. We began our RE learning about remembering. We learnt about Hindu tradition and the different ways they remember their gods, especially Vishnu. We looked at some special items from Hindu tradition and learnt about shrines. We also learnt about Holi and explored what it is like to throw paint powder. In Art we created clay tiles by using tools to draw/imprint our design of a building inspired by Gaudi.

 

Week 3 (w/b 16/01/23)

This week we learnt about compass directions in Geography. We went on a walk around our school and thought about what is in the north, south, east and west of the school grounds. We continued our gymnastics skills in PE. In Art we learnt about Gaudi and created a building in his style. In PSHE this week we heard the story ‘The Smartest Giant in Town’ and discussed being kind and who has been kind to us. We then made cards for someone who has been kind to us.

 

 

Week 2 (w/b 09/01/23)

We have had a super week this week.  In Geography we have been learning how to use maps and identify places and road names. We created our own key to a simple map of Holbury and added symbols to show were things were (e.g. post boxes, shops). In Art, we went outside and created an observation drawing of the school. This week in P.E. we continued to develop our gymnastics skills. Red Class enjoyed using the apparatus and the wall bars to balance, climb and jump. We have been learning how materials can be grouped in Science. In Maths this week we have been learning strategies to add numbers together and learnt the names of 2D shapes.

 

On Thursday 12th we went on a whole school trip. We visited the Hindu temple in Southampton in the morning and observed the Aarti Ceremony. We looked at the shrines and listened to a talk. In the afternoon we went to the MAST Theatre to see ‘The Smartest Giant in Town’.

Week 1 (w/b 02/01/23)

Red Class have enjoyed their first week back at school after the Christmas break. Our new topic is ‘Our School’ and we have started learning about our school in relation to the local area. In Geography, Red Class had a go at reading maps and looking at a key to understand the symbols. We have also been on the wall bars in PE, developing our gymnastics skills. In Art we created an observation drawing of a building using different pencils to draw lines, shapes and shade.

Spring 1

This half term (Spring 1) we are reading books by Rebecca Cobb.

Week 7 (w/b 12/12/22)

We have had a busy last week of school! This week we learnt how to subtract using a number line in Maths and explored our senses in Science. On Wednesday, we performed to the school and our grownups at our Listen 2 Me Music Concert. We have been learning about Christmas in our RE lessons and why it is important to Christians. Red Class enjoyed acting out the Christmas story and discussing the different parts of the story. We have been reading the book ‘Snow Day’ by Richard Curtis (illustrated by Rebecca Cobb) and took part in different activities relating to the story, we then created a display of our work in the library. At the end of the week we had our Christmas party and disco, it was lots of fun!

Week 6 (w/b 05/12/22)

Red Class have been learning about animals this week in Science. We learnt about the different characteristics animals have and how they can be grouped based on this (e.g. fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals). We also explored how animals move to catch their prey. In English, we learnt about guinea pigs and wrote a report about them. On Monday we had some guinea pigs join us in the classroom for the day and we were able to observe them. We watched them move, fed and stroked them. Red Class have also enjoyed performing in our school Nativity and being part of the band.  

Week 5 (w/b 28/11/22)

This week we created our own Matisse style artwork using textiles. We followed our plans and created different effects using felt. In Maths we have been measuring height using non-standard units. On Thursday Red Class enjoyed Christmas craft day and took part in different Christmas crafts around the school.

Week 4 (w/b 21/11/22)

Red Class have been learning about Islam this week as part of Inter Faith Week 2022. We learnt about the special book, place and clothes that are important to Muslims. We explored Ramadan, how Muslims pray and created a prayer mat based on the one we looked at in class. Red Class also tried some food that some Muslims may eat during Eid al-Fitr.

 

Red Class continued their tuned percussion in Music this week and played the glockenspiel, chime bars, metallophone and xylophone. In Maths we learnt about measuring in non-standard units. We compared and measured different worms and thought about which one was the longest/shortest.

 

Week 3 (w/b 14/11/22)

This week Red Class made a fruit / vegetable salad as part of their D.T. learning. We designed, made and evaluated our salads (we even got to try them too!) We have been singing and playing different instruments in our Music lesson this week as we prepare for our Nativity.

 

On Thursday 17th November we had our ‘Be Bright Be Seen Day’ and Red Class dressed up in bright clothes. We thought about staying safe in the dark and what we could wear to allow traffic to see us. Red Class also took part in some road safety activities throughout the day. We put our learning into practice on our walk to St. Bernard’s Church (our Park and Stride parking spot). In the afternoon we tested out our bright clothes in the dark and learnt about florescent and reflective clothing.

 

On Friday 18th November we raised money for Children in Need and our school councillors sold biscuits at break time.

Week 2 (w/b 07/11/22)

We have been learning about ‘The Three Little Pigs’ this week in our English lessons. We have written posters, letters, descriptions and acted out the story. In Design and Technology we learnt about different fruit and vegetables and how to prepare them. We then explored four different tools, a grater, a knife, a juicer and a peeler. It was lots of fun!  Red Class used different art pencils in art and discussed the differences after drawing lines and shapes.

This week we also decorated poppies. We took these into our special Remembrance Day Collective Worship on Friday 11th November and created a field of poppies.

Week 1 (w/b 31/10/22)

We have had a fantastic first week back at school! In PE Red Class began their dance unit and had fun with ‘streamers’, making different shapes and movements. In Maths this week we have been representing numbers using tens and ones and thinking about chronological order by sequencing events using language (first, next, etc.). Red Class enjoyed our new role play (vets) that links to our new topic, Awesome Animals. On Wednesday we had our first Listen to Me music lesson from Hampshire Music Service. It was great. We are learning about tuned percussion this half term and will be playing xylophones, metallophones, chime bars and glockenspiels.  In Science we did an investigation about how far a car can travel based on how high the ramp is. Red Class worked together to explore this. We also used the paint programme on the laptops as part of our Computing and discovered what the tools do.

Autumn 2

Our topic this half term is ‘Awesome Animals’.

This half term (Autumn 2) we are reading books by Kes Gray.

Week 7 (w/b 17/10/22)

Red Class have been exploring the story ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ this week. We wrote labels, a description and questions linking to the story. Red Class also used the small world objects to act out the story.

Some children in Red Class took part in the PTFA Bake Off and made some fantastic cakes at home!

We have enjoyed our seaside topic this half term and shared our learning with our grownups after school on Thursday.

 

Week 6 (w/b 10/10/22)

This week we have been learning about subtraction in Maths! We said number sentences when knocking over bottles, read number sentences and found the answer practically and then used the Numicon to record our working. We also enjoyed our Design and Technology learning this week. We explored puppets and then designed, made and evaluated our own. This linked to our topic ‘Oh I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside’. Everyone created their puppet based on one of the characters from a Punch and Judy show. In P.E. we used the apparatus and wall bars to develop our skills.

Week 5 (w/b 03/10/22)

Red Class have had a busy week! We went on our trip to Lepe Beach on Monday and enjoyed a puppet show by Prazin’ Hands on Thursday. This week we have been learning about addition in Maths and writing a leaflet about Lepe in English. We have also explored seeds and bulbs in Science and set up an experiment to discover the best way to care for a plant and what they need to survive. In Computing we learnt about algorithms and used them to move a brick. Some children in Red Class were also chosen to sit at the top table at lunchtime for outstanding manners and behaviour in the lunch hall.

Lepe Beach Trip (03/10/22)

Red Class had a fantastic time at Lepe Beach! We enjoyed linking our learning about the seaside to our local beach. Red Class took part in a seaside safari and explored rock pools to discover the different animals and plants that live there. We also created a piece of Andy Goldsworthy inspired artwork using the natural materials we found on the beach. While we were there we did a litter pick along the beach to keep our environment safe and tidy. In the afternoon we also went on a walk to look at the sluice gate, salt marsh and watch house.

Week 4 (w/b 26/09/22)

Red Class took part in the Harvest Service this week and did an amazing job!

We thought about the colours of harvest and painted fruit and vegetables to represent the colours of the rainbow. Red Class have also been exploring number bonds in Maths and learning about seasides in the past in History. We created our own character from the past and added them to a seaside scene. Red Class enjoyed acting out their own Punch and Judy show and writing about Punch in English.We also finished our own Andy Goldsworthy inspired art.

Week 3 (w/b 19/09/22)

This week we have been learning about instructions in English and writing instructions to make a sandcastle. As part of our learning we made a real sandcastle, a paper sandcastle, wrote a ‘you will need’ list and wrote instructions. In Maths, we have been adding and recognising different coins. Red Class explored some seaside items from the past in History and sorted objects into old and new. In Art, we began to create our own piece of artwork in the style of Andy Goldsworthy using natural materials.

Week 2 (w/b 12/09/22)

This week in Maths, we have been finding missing numbers, recognising and representing numbers in different ways. Red Class enjoyed using the playdough this week and using benches and tables in PE. We learnt how to be safe on the equipment and how to move along benches in different ways. In Art we are learning about Andy Goldsworthy. We created a class piece of artwork outside in his style and worked together as a team.

Week 1 (w/b 05/09/22)

The children have had an exciting first week in Year 1. We have been learning about the seaside and explored maps in Geography. Red Class have also been learning sounds in Phonics and working on reading fluently in our reading sessions. We have been focusing on number in Maths and improving our number formation. Red Class enjoyed their first library session and made library paddles. We enjoyed gymnastics in PE this week and developed our balancing and jumping. Red Class went on a walk in Science to identify different trees in our Wild Area.
