Summer 1 - We’re Going on a Bear Hunt

We shared a lovely Teddy Bears' picnic with our family members.

We made biscuits for our Teddy Bears' picnic.

We celebrated the Kings Coronation.

Art

In Art, we have been learning to colour mix. We have found out that when we mix red and yellow it makes orange, yellow and blue makes green and red and blue makes purple.

In Phonics, we have been writing dictated sentences.

Bears

In our English lessons, we have been learning about different bears. We have found out about sun bears, polar bears, pandas, moon bears and black bears. We have been writing some of the facts we have found out. We have also been looking at the globe to see where they live in different parts of the world.

Non Fiction Books

We have been learning about non-fiction books. We have shared lots of non-fiction books with our friends in our information boat.  We have found out they have a contents page, an index, lots of real pictures, facts and headings.

This half term (Summer 1) we are reading books by Emily Gravett

Spring 2- Magic Beans

Art

Blue Class have been exploring using different drawing pencils in Art. They have used 2B, 4B and charcoal pencils to make marks in their Art books.  This week the children used the pencils to draw their own giants.

The children have enjoyed using the drawing pencils independently during their continuous provision time. They have drawn pictures of our class plant thinking carefully about which pencil to use for certain parts.

"The plant it light so I need to use a 2B pencil and the bulb is dark so I need to use a charcoal pencil."

The children have also challenged themselves to label their drawings.

We have a beanstalk growing in the courtyard!

The children have been really excited to find a beanstalk growing in our courtyard.

The class have made predictions of what they think might happen to the beanstalk.
"I think it will keep growing and then there will be a hole in the roof."
"I think if we chop it down with an axe it will then grow again because it is magic!"
"I think there will be a giant at the top."
"I think it has grown because we threw magic beans on the floor."

We will continue to watch what will happen to our beanstalk over the next few weeks.

Which ones are real?

The children had to investigate the objects in the tuff tray and decide if they were real beans or not. There were  different varieties of real beans and many different bean imposters such as glass beads, pom poms, buttons and tiny bells. The children were quick to discount the buttons and bells. It was tricky to put into words just why and how we knew the real beans were real.

This half term (Spring 2) we are reading books by Tim Hopgood

Spring 1- Who's Afraid of the Dark

Literacy

We have been learning to chunk up longer words by reading and writing them.

Maths

In Maths, we have been exploring the Numicon and matching it to the correct  cone in the sand tray.

We have been exploring ways of making 5.

Measuring - We have been measuring the length of different sticks for Mummy Owl. We measured the sticks using the multi-link cubes. We then used the language longest/ shortest to compare them.

Chinese New Year

Blue Class have learnt about Chinese New Year. We found out that this year it is the year of the rabbit. To celebrate Chinese New Year we decorated lanterns, made dragon masks, painted a picture to represent the rabbit and wrote the numbers in Chinese using glitter.

Art- Clay

In Art this half term, we have been using clay. We have used lots of different tools to explore making marks in the clay. After we experimented, we applied the skills we have learnt about clay to make our very own clay owl baby.

The children have enjoyed drawing their own pictures of owls during their continuous provision time. They looked carefully at the shape and colours to create their own drawings. They wanted to draw them on black paper because they have learnt that owls are nocturnal and come out at night.

We have created nests for the owl babies using natural resources.

This half term we are reading Owl Babies by Martin Waddell.

Pie Corbett - The Enormous Turnip

This half term our Pie Corbett story is 'The Enormous Turnip'. We have been retelling the story in our book corner using the masks and pictures with our friends.

The children have been exploring different fruit and vegetables by using the magnifying glasses to take a closer look at them. The children enjoyed making vegetable soup in the water tray and painting  pictures of their favourite fruit and vegetables. They also sorted the pictures into groups and they enjoyed using the scales to weigh them in our fruit and vegetable shop.

This half term (Spring 1) we are reading books by Julia Donaldson

Autumn 2- Journeys

The Gingerbread Man

This half term we have been reading 'The Gingerbread Man' as part of our Journeys topic. The children have enjoyed re-telling the story using our class story map and sequencing pictures,  decorating their own Gingerbread men and making a Gingerbread man out of salt dough. The children also took part in a Science investigation. We paused the Gingerbread Man story at the part where he reaches the river and the children each made a prediction of what would happen if he had to swim across and hadn't met the fox. The children then tested their predictions by dunking gingerbread biscuits into water to see what happened. The children had lots of lots of fun.

Art- Textiles

In Art this half term, the children have been exploring different materials. They had to choose which materials they wanted to use to decorate their Gingerbread Man and to give him some clothes. The children thought really carefully about the different materials making their own choices for the different sections on their Gingerbread Man.

We learned new vocabulary linked to the Jewish faith including learning about the Torah, the Synagogue as a place of worship and the festival of Hannukah.
